old quebec

a strange feeling of foreign impositions in your own country.
a bilingual line of "do i cross the sea of embarrassment and attempt a bonjour, or stick with an english-snubbed hello"?
an attitude of arrogant unintelligence in a population known for its arrogant "oui's" and overtly long snouts.

despite the cold that drops my BC conditioned inner temperature to sub-37 degrees, i adore --with a french accent -- this place. the ancient bricks holding together our canadian history, the snowbanks the size of volleyball teams, the taxi drivers cursing in their new york-like fashion. even the post-baguette scent on every french-canadians breath after they scoff at our lame attempts to be semi-bilingual. i love the awful beauty of the east.
